Sacramento officials say two car-sharing companies, Hertz and Zipcar, have responded to their formal request for help in bringing communal car rentals to town.
Zipcar already operates a five-vehicle car-sharing program at the UC Davis campus. The cars are parked at specific locations around campus and rented by the hour or day by people who have signed on as car-share members.
Sacramento city leaders say they think the concept can work on a bigger scale here, especially in the central city where cars aren't always necessary.
