Sacramento-area gasoline prices plunged more than a dime a gallon over the past week. The average retail price of gas in the Sacramento area fell 10.2 cents to $4.04 a gallon, according to today's weekly report by SactoGasPrices.com, a GasBuddy.com website.
That price is still $1.08 higher than it was a year ago but 11.2 cents lower than one month ago. It was the third consecutive week of price declines locally - at-the-pump costs fell 1.5 cents and 4.9 cents a gallon, respectively, the previous two weeks. Nationally, the average price dropped 8.8 cents a gallon to $3.83 over the past week - 0.1 cents higher than last month and $1.04 ahead of last year.Energy analysts cited declining oil prices to explain the price declines, which run counter to the historical trend in the period just prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
