The Sacramento region can expect a short break today before another storm arrives tonight and Friday, renewing a threat of localized flooding, foothill mudslides and Sierra avalanches.
The flooding concern may be at its peak for the winter, largely because any new rain that falls cannot be readily absorbed.
"There is some concern for localized flooding," said National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Smith. "The good thing is we do have about 24 hours to allow the creeks to drop back down."
To clear room for more runoff, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation on Wednesday boosted water releases from Folsom Dam into the American River to 25,000 cubic feet per second.
